Question: Dutch Railways (NS) are the largest rail operator in the Netherlands. What were the reasons for the company to start using DevOps?
Elbert van Dijk: The Dutch do travel more and more. This leads to a more intensively usage of our roads and also of our trains. For 2040 a growth of 27% to 45% is expected. At the moment, during peak hours the trains are already very crowded. Investing in infrastructure alone won't help us. Besides this, our business wants to facilitate the customer from door to door, assisting him in each step in his journey. IT plays a large role in this journey and in managing the increasing usage of our trains. For this reason we think that we need to be an agile organisation so we can learn faster and adopt faster to the changing demand of our customers. In this agile organisation, DevOps teams will be the future so we are experimenting with this. With the agile way of working, the NS wants to be faster, cheaper, better, and has more fun!
Question: Did you have role models when you started or did you benefit from any experiences by other companies using DevOps?
Elbert van Dijk: I had benefits from visiting conferences and other companies. I will always remember a presentation of KPN Digital I attended a few years ago. I got inspired by the story of their DevOps transition. After that presentation it was clear to me, that it was also possible in an old bureaucratic organisation like NS. I think there are a lot of similarities between NS and KPN. Other companies that inspire me are two Dutch web shops, Bol.com (has got German roots) and Coolblue.
I hope, I can inspire others with my presentation.
Question: What were the major challenges in the beginning?
Elbert van Dijk: The major challenge was getting autonomy, a platform to deploy our Docker containers. We had an Ops department that was responsible for running our software. This department could not provide us a platform to deploy our Docker containers and it was also a challenge to get the responsibility over the software in production.
Question: In your presentation, you will talk about the process of establishing DevOps within Dutch Railways (NS). Do you offer a useful guide for other companies as well?
Elbert van Dijk: Sorry, I have to disappoint you, I won't have a guide for other companies. Other companies have other problems and need different solutions, I think. I will share my learnings and failures and I hope, I can inspire other people with my presentation and motivate them in their journey towards DevOps!
Question: What role will DevOps play in ten years – for Dutch Railways (NS) and for the economy in general?
Elbert van Dijk: As the NS we want to be an agile organisation within three years, we want to be 100% agile, 50% DevOps and 30% BizDevOps. I think and hope that in 5 years, DevOps will be the standard. And maybe in ten years we will be in a transition from DevOps to…?
